Director of Bioinformatics: Duties & Responsibilities

As the Director of Bioinformatics, you will be responsible for leading a team of bioinformatic scientists and working closely with R&D.

Your duties as the Director of Bioinformatics will be many and varied. However, your key duties and responsibilities are as follows:

  • Analyse complex biological datasets (e.g. genomic sequences, gene expression data and protein structures)

  • Develop and implement software tools and algorithms used to analyse and interpret biological data

  • Create databases to store experimental data

  • Write reports, publications, news releases, grant applications and workflows as needed

  • Design and develop guidelines and processes to ensure high levels of quality and efficiency

  • Work with researchers from other fields (such as biologists, computer scientists and geneticists) to design experiments and develop research questions

  • Stay up to date with new developments and technologies in the field of bioinformatics

 

Director of Bioinformatics: Role Requirements

If you want to secure a job as a Director of Bioinformatics, you will most likely need the following items on your CV:

  • A relevant PHD in a relevant field (e.g. bioinformatics, computational biology or genomics)

  • Proven leadership experience in a bioinformatics role

  • Hands-on technical knowledge of bioinformatics

  • A strong understanding of molecular diagnostic technologies, commercialisation strategies and product positioning

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and stakeholder management skills

  • Working knowledge and practical experience with regulatory requirements for both software development and product submission

However, with the right experience, you could earn upward of £150,000 at some companies.
