

ROLE OVERVIEW
An exciting opportunity for a Team Leader to join a leading biopharmaceutical organization dedicated to innovative upstream process development. Based within their expanding Biopharma division, this full-time, permanent role offers the chance to lead and develop a talented team in a dynamic and cutting-edge environment. Located in a collaborative setting, the successful candidate will play a crucial role in optimizing cell culture and bioprocessing activities to support the production of high-quality therapeutic proteins and antibodies.
In this position, you'll oversee daily upstream process development tasks, contribute to process optimisation, ensure compliance with quality standards, and collaborate across international teams to drive scientific excellence and growth.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Your duties as the Team Leader will be varied however the key duties and responsibilities are as follows:
• Lead and manage a team responsible for cell culture and upstream bioprocess activities, ensuring operational excellence and continuous improvement.
• Oversee cell culture operations, including revival, subculture, cryopreservation, sampling, and in-process analysis, using bioreactor systems such as ambr250 and other process development equipment.
• Conduct daily monitoring and adjustments of process parameters to optimise culture conditions and maximise product quality.
• Perform data analysis on critical parameters such as cell density and viability, report findings, troubleshoot technical issues, and implement solutions.
• Ensure compliance with GLP / GMP standards by executing safety inspections, risk assessments, COSHH documentation, and maintaining SOPs and experiment plans.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams both in the UK and abroad, supporting process development strategies and company growth objectives.
• As the Team Leader, you will foster team motivation, drive results, and maintain high standards of safety and quality.
ROLE REQUIREMENTS
To be successful in your application to this exciting role as the Team Leader – Upstream Process Development we are looking to identify the following on your profile and past history:
• A Degree or higher level in a biological or technical scientific discipline (e.g., Biological Science, Biotechnology, Bioprocessing, PhD or Masters preferred).
• Proven experience within biopharma, biotech, or contract research sectors, particularly in process development involving automated bioreactors such as ambr250 or similar systems.
• Extensive knowledge of GLP / GMP standards, safety audits, risk assessments, and documentation procedures.
• Strong data analysis and IT skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office and biopharma software such as JMP or Biopac.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to lead, motivate, and build effective teams.
